Testing your e-mail security
Is someone forwarding spam mail from your e-mail server?
Third-party mail relay occurs when a mail server allows an external mail client to forward mail to it for processing and delivery. An external mail client is one that is outside of your organization. If an e-mail server allows third-party relay, anyone on the Internet can send e-mail messages to the server and it does all the work to parse and deliver the messages. In addition, the mail appears to come from the mail server's site and not from the site that actually sent the message.
February 1, 1998: The Internet Mail Consortium (IMC) released a survey reporting that 55% of the Internet mail servers remain vulnerable to unauthorized third party relay. Not too long ago, nearly every mail server was vulnerable to relay. So, although there is a lot of work left to do, we've made remarkable progress over the past few months
